What is a DOT Physical Exam?

  • A DOT physical is a federally mandated health examination required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The exam ensures that commercial drivers are physically and mentally fit to operate a commercial vehicle safely. Drivers must complete this exam to receive or maintain their DOT medical certificate.

Who Needs a DOT Physical Exam?

  • DOT physicals are required for drivers of commercial vehicles that:
  • Transport hazardous materials.
  • Carry more than 8 passengers for compensation.
  • Carry more than 15 passengers, not for compensation.
  • Have a gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more.
